Assignment #1 - Applying Strategies and Best Practices
For this assignment I chose the following scenario:
Hopper has an IEP with accommodations for Dysgraphia. Your class requires written reports in each unit on various topics. Hopper expresses concern over his grade in your class because of the written reports. You know Hopper is putting forth effort, but he still is not passing your class. He asks what he can do to improve his grade.
How do you respond?

Post in your blog: What are two difficulties each student may be experiencing in their online class? What are two best practices or specific strategies that might be helpful. Your reflection should include at least four well-developed paragraphs.
Hopper is definitely experiencing difficulty with his writing abilities due to his Dysgraphia. Due to the nature of this learning disability he is likely having problems formulating his thoughts as well as putting them to paper. One thing that may help would be to offer him extended time because this assignment will likely require more time and effort from Hopper than from the average student.
In this instance I would definitely offer the option to submit an oral response. He is showing signs of effort and will try hard to meet the expectations of this assignment. It would be a great idea for him to use a recording app or site to submit his response orally rather than written.
Another difficulty for Hopper would likely be confidence and he may feel unwilling to try. He is likely feeling frustrated and discouraged but it's great that he's reaching out for help and showing concern as well as putting in effort so we will want to keep that going.
I can keep his confidence up by offering encouragement as well as offering accommodations that will allow him to feel successful. This combined with the necessary extended time and oral response accommodations should allow Hopper to be successful in this course and improve his grade.
